What are the tools and processes for translating a 3D form onto a 2D surface?
This Foundation Studies course developed an understanding of human form proportion and structure through various observational drawing exercises. Contour, form, tone, positive and negative space were studied through drawing and rendering a posed model, while quick gestural drawing was a continuous component throughout, which challenged participants to observe line, structure and movement. Surface and internal anatomy were also introduced to create an awareness of the body’s underlying structure.
Through presentations and independent research, the students learnt about the relevance of human form drawing to fine artists and contemporary practitioners. In relation to their own development, they saw that continued application improves observational skills and that fundamentally, the ability for representational drawing is in understanding what we see, not what we think we see.
